By Bethania Palma, Staff WriterAZUSA - A new visitor center opened at the entrance of the Angeles National Forest on Thursday. The San Gabriel Canyon Gateway Center "is a place where you can go in and park, and get some information on animal life and natural fauna," said Azusa spokesman Martin Quiroz. He explained passes are needed for hiking, biking, off-roading and swimming in the forest, which can be purchased at the center.
The center, located at 1950 N. San Gabriel Canyon Road, resulted from a collaboration between the city, the U.S. Forest Service, L.A. County and the Metropolitan Water District. Azusa Mayor Joe Rocha said, It will be open to schools for field trips and lectures.

By Evelyn Barge, Staff WriterA ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 15 celebrated the opening of a new ranger station and visitor entrance to Azusa Canyon and the Angeles National Forest.
The San Gabriel Canyon Gateway Center features an interpretive learning center where visitors can get information about the natural surroundings, said Joe Jacobs, director of Azusa Recreation and Family Services.
"It's a great stop for visitors for education on the river and nature, and as a field trip site for schools," Jacobs said. "The education component is important."
Construction on the 1,500-square-foot center — which is now open to the public — has been completed, and crews are working to finish landscaping.
The structure and adjacent property also include parking, rest rooms and places for visitors to relax and purchase passes into the forest.
