Brian the Bighorn says: "Horns are not shed, but grow throughout a sheep’s life. A line is produced each winter when growth slows. This helps to tell a sheep’s age."

High School Environmental Studies

Water Field Lab Utilizing CBL (Calculator Based Laboratory) technology, students test water-quality parameters in San Antonio Creek, measure stream flow and turbidity. Macro-aquatic insects, acting as indicator species of stream health, will also be surveyed. Micro-aquatic organism sampling (utilizing microscope and flex cam) is also available. This program, frequently combined with the Chaparral Studies Lab at a nearby field site, works with students in small study groups.

Geology Lab Rock type, mineral composition, Moh's Hardness Scale, the structure of the earth, and the principles of plate tectonics are just some of the fundamental geological themes we will explore while assembling a nine-piece rock board. Practical application follows in the form of a field investigation as we explore remnants of the powerful geological forces underlying the formation of the San Gabriel Mts. Plate tectonics, thrust fault, displacement, dike, sill, intrusion, slide, all become more than abstract concepts in this excursion into our local mountains.

Chaparral Studies Field Lab A program that takes advantage of our unique southern California Mediterranean habitat. We will borrow tools from the professional botanist, and in small study groups run line transects to perform quadrat studies, sampling for species diversity, biomass, and other parameters.
