Welcome to Historic Mt. Baldy Schoolhouse!
From the time it first opened its doors in 1921 the Mt. Baldy Schoolhouse has been a center of activity in Mt. Baldy Village. With the help of the Mt. Baldy community, local historical societies, school districts, and many volunteers, this historic building has been transformed into an award-winning visitor center. An adjacent classroom, greenhouse, and reproductions of a Gabrielino-Tongva village and historic California Gold Rush camp provide additional educational opportunities.
An indoor nature trail showcases the natural biomes of San Antonio Canyon. Along the trail you will encounter a great horned owl, golden eagle, gray fox, bighorn sheep, mule deer and other mountain wildlife. Trail signs interpret the vegetational changes along your "short" hike to the top of "Mt. Baldy."
Interpretive displays highlight the early life of the Schoolhouse, and the historic changes in the canyon from the miners of bygone days to the first recreational visitors early in the 20th Century.
The friendly staff will be happy to answer your questions about hiking trails, the natural features of the area, and other recreational opportunities. You may also purchase your USDA Forest Service Adventure Pass at this location.
The Visitor Center Store holds books, posters, maps and other items related to the canyon and its natural history. The garden outside is planted with native chaparral plants.
A short history trail beside the Visitor Center leads visitors past Joatngna, the Gabrielino Village, a California Gold Rush camp, and a historic Mt. Baldy cabin. Restrooms and picnic tables are also on site. Come enjoy a bit of local history in the pines!
