Old Rincon Fire Station History
In the old days, Rincon was used by the native Tongva people as a camp. In later years, ranchers grazed their cattle under the majestic oaks.
Some say Rincon's heyday was in the late 1800s when Camp Rincon was established with a hotel, cabins, tents, tennis court and general store. Set in a cove along the San Gabriel River, this oak-shaded glen was proclaimed to be "The Gem of San Gabriel Canyon".
The 1930s saw Camp Rincon used as a base for the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built roads, trails and fire breaks in the Angeles National Forest. But the disastrous flood of 1938 spelled doom for this sylvan retreat wiping out most of the camp and its beautiful surroundings.
A final blow came when the flood of 1969 scoured the San Gabriel Canyon leaving the area much as it looks today.
An historic Forest Service Fire Station, which is now being converted into the San Gabriel Canyon Environmental Education Center, occupies the upper reaches of Camp Rincon today.
