Third through Twelfth Grade Programs

Life in the Canyon - 3rd through 4th Grade Students will become forest detectives on an interactive scavenger hunt as we investigate the plant and animal life of our local canyons and mountains. We'll make or paint plaster animal tracks that can be taken home as a remembrance of our experience. The day ends with a short hike along a nature trail or a visit to the cold waters of the San Gabriel River.

A Naturalist's Journal - 3rd through 4th Grade Our day of discovery begins with a short hike along a canyon nature trail. We will explore habitats, animal and plant adaptations, and cycles of life. Students fill journals with rubbings, drawings and observations from our experiences during this unique program which combines art and science.

Geology - 5th through 12th Grade Discover how the San Gabriel Mountains were formed. Students will understand the difference between igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks as we assemble a nine-piece rock collection of local and some not-so-local rocks. After lunch we'll hike along the west fork of the San Gabriel River and visit the San Gabriel Fault Zone.

Background and Follow-up Information on Geology

Gold Rush - 4th through 5th Grade Experience what it was like to be a gold miner in the late 1800s. Students will be introduced to California gold mining history where it really happened! By the end of the day, we'll be using words like gold fever, claim jumper, placer and hydraulic mining. The highlight of the day will be panning for gold in the San Gabriel River.

A River Runs through It - 4th through 12th Grade Experience actual hands-on science at its best. Students will investigate the water quality of the San Gabriel River. Elementary and Junior High classes will utilize test tablets and color charts to test for four different water quality parameters. High School classes will utilize Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL) technology. We will measure stream flow, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia and nitrates. All grade levels will have access to microscopes and a flex-cam to observe micro- and macro-aquatic life.

Background and Follow-up Information on Water Ecology

Land of the Tongva - 3rd through 6th Grade Make a pine needle broom, paint Native American rock art and wash our hands with yucca soap. These are some of the activities we will experience when we go back to a simpler time when the Native Americans were one with the land in San Gabriel Canyon.

Wildland Fire Studies - 4th through 12th Grade Travel into the burn area of the recent Curve Fire. Students will become Fire Ecologists as we lay out line transects, measure and record vegetation type and abundance, take soil samples, and check for signs of wildlife. We will take the data back to the classroom where the information will be analyzed and discussed. The results will become part of a data bank for future research.
