Summer Institute 2010 Program

The Summer Institute is a four-day outdoor adventure in the Angeles National Forest. Focusing upon a different subject each day, the Institute stresses an interdisciplinary hands-on approach to learning and social bonding with new friends.

2010 Session

Session 1: July 27-30, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Session 2: August 3-6, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm

Ages 8 and above
(Space limited to 25 per session)

California Frontiers (Day One)

Two great cultures of historic California come together at Mt. Baldy. You will meet the 49ers as you pan for gold and reenact a gold rush play. Experience the Native American culture of the Tongva (Gabrielino) by recreating their lifestyle - grinding acorns, doing rock art, making fire and creating tools.

Adventures in Mountain Habitats (Day Two)

Stunning vistas in San Antonio Canyon form the backdrop for this investigation of the habitats of the San Gabriel Mountains. Playing the role of botanists and wildlife biologists, we'll explore the interconnections within our native ecosystems. You'll learn how to use GPS, and perform transect and quadrant studies in the chaparral life zone. Along a cold mountain stream you'll analyze water quality and survey populations of micro-aquatic life

Mountains on the Move (Day Three)

Lying at a junction of two great continental plates, southern California is a geological wonder. You'll become a geologist for the day, learning the basics of earth science while assembling a personal rock collection. We'll keep up with the latest seismic activity coming into our CalTech earthquake monitor. The day concludes with a rambling adventure into the canyon to explore a fault zone and examine the powerful forces that have shaped our natural landscape.

Scientific Sleuthing (Day Four)

Your chance to become a detective in the fascinating world of science. The evidence is in the field under rocks, in crevices and along the bottom of mountain creeks. Collected samples travel with us back to the classroom to be examined with the help of microscopes and flex video cameras. It's a day devoted to worlds seldom seen and to our own scientific curiosity.
